The Satico’s Story

Satico’s roots go back to 1917 when P.A. Tierno, the grandfather of Rob Salamida opened a luggage and leather goods store on Court Street in Binghamton, NY.   In 1941 another Tierno retail enterprise selling cameras and gifts opened on Endicott’s Washington Ave.  This store included Rob’s father, Dominick, along with a technical partner Jerry Colonna.  The store took the name SaTiCo’s from their names.  After the end of WWII, the store moved a few doors down to its present location and the partnership dissolved as Dominick went to work at IBM and Jerry moved to Arizona.  Returning from the war Rob’s uncle, Andrew Tierno, took over the relocated store for the next 40 years.  Rob Salamida, who began bottling his State Fair Spiedie Sauce in 1976, soon after bought the store that he had also worked at since he had been in the eighth grade.

The Parent Teacher Department

Rob began teaching business classes in 1978, first at BOCES and then as an adjunct professor at Broome Community College.  Fully appreciating the fact that education is essential for everyone, he took notice of some job applicants at his spiedie bottling facility that could not read enough to fill out the application form.  In 1991 after discussing this issue with several educators he saw the need to offer educational materials for both teachers and parents of troubled students.  Within a few months he replaced an entire floor level of party decorations and favors at the store with the latest educational books, tools and materials.  To quickly learn the educational industry he went to the national trade show and met with many entrepreneurial teachers who had gone from the blackboard to drawing board producing their well-worked teaching materials.  Word of the new department spread quickly and as the cases were being unpacked many teachers came in just to see the vast array of materials.  Today people come from out of town and out of state to see the one of the largest selections of teaching supplies.
